Open Source Working

By Lee Raney - Posted on 20 May 2009

Open Source is going beyond just software and web development.  There are some philosophies behind it that deal with collaboration and community, and even some paradigm shifts on how we work.  I'm not sure if everyone would group all of this together, but there are commonalities between social media, open source, agile development (e.g., SCRUM), Barcamps, and now "co-working" that are changing not just the way websites and software is development, but even how we work.

I am at a new co-working space in Dallas right now called Company Dallas It is only one of 3 I know of in Dallas, but the second one to open in the last 2 months. Co-working is taking off around the country, as smaller businesses and startups look to save money on traditional office space.

What is co-working? It is a "cafe-like community/collaboration space for developers, writers and independents."  It is shared office space with cafe culture, designed to be better than "working at Starbucks". There is a good video about it on the Coworking Community Blog

I've also been involved in one aspect or another throughout my career with project management, and now that I am getting into SCRUM I am also seeing some paradigm shifts in project management.  Social media, Drupal, SCRUM, and now co-working - I'm not sure maybe I am on a progression here...my friend Dustin might say the progression will lead me to be a vegetarian next, but I love a good Texas steak so he better not hold his breath on that one!
